Multi-Axis Machining

Definition

Multi-axis machining combines multiple simultaneous motion axes — spindles, turrets, C axes, and Y axes — in one machine so a part's turned and milled features are completed together. Instead of moving a part between lathe and mill, a multi-axis machine finishes it complete, preserving accuracy and eliminating setups.

Where it Fits

parts with both turned and milled features

cross-holes, flats, off-center features

tolerance relationships between features that setups would break

any part currently visiting two or more machines

In Depth

Reading the axis count honestly

Axis count measures how much work happens simultaneously. A single-turret turn/mill with sub-spindle and Y axis (5–6 axes) completes most complex parts. Twin-turret, twin-spindle machines (10 axes — Eurotech Rapido) cut cycle time by working both ends at once. Triple-turret machines (13 axes — Eurotech Multipla) put three tools in the cut simultaneously. More axes buy overlap — which is cycle time — not just capability.

The Eurotech range by turret count

Single (Ultima B620 series 34–54 HP; Stallion B750/B1250, 16-station servo turret, up to 96 tools) · Double (Trofeo BMX 51/70/80 — dual 10,000 RPM spindles, dual Y; Rapido BMX 45Y2 — 10 axes) · Triple (Multipla B446/B465/B481 T3Y3 — 13 axes, 3 Y axes). Option to ship with Total Solutions: application engineering, turnkey setup, lifetime training, and 24/7 support.

PROOF

T&L Automatics (defense): a 74-second part runs in 60 seconds — "the speed difference alone completely pays for the machine."

Common questions

How many axes do I need?

Enough to complete your part in one setup — often a single-turret sub-spindle Y-axis machine; more axes buy cycle-time overlap on complex or high-volume work.

Multi-axis vs a lathe plus a mill — which is cheaper?

Count labor, WIP, and scrap from re-fixturing, not just machine price. Request a free time study.

Is multi-axis harder to program?

More capable, yes; unsupported, no — Eurotech's turnkey delivery includes proven programs, and training is free for life.

Is this the right fit for your part?

Send a print and Eurotech's application engineers return a free time study — real cycle time and per-part cost on your actual component.
